Access to MATLAB

I received a couple of emails (and probably more to come) asking for help on how to install MATLAB ver 7.6 which I have provided the link to our course website. As I have explained during the lecture, the MATLAB is only licensed to UTM and the way they do this is by detecting the computer IP. If it is a UTM domain then you can download and run it. Everytime before you run it, your computer IP will be checked. For students accessing the program within UTM's domain (be it in KL or Skudai), they should have no problem. However if they try to run it from their homes, then it will not work. To get around this problem, some people say that you should log in to UTM's vpn. I have never done this and please don't ask me on how to do this - please ask the Computer Centre on how to do this. If you can run it via vpn, I would certainly appreciate it if you could email me the procedures so that we can share with others.

Back to the two emails I mentioned above, well, it turned out that they were not from Malaysia. So, there is nothing much I can help.

Videos on Youtube and online course on power electronics

There is a video on Youtube from Fred C. Lee that gives an overview on power electronic systems, energy savings, and touch a little bit on variable speed drive systems and their benefits. Surprisingly, if you search lectures on electrical machines and power electronics on Youtube, you will find a lot of lecture videos from India under the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning. Some of them are useful especially for those who want to review power electronic converters, without opening a textbook (?). By the way, as a graduate student you should know how to learn.

For those who are serious in revising power electronics (again, without opening a textbook on PE), there is an online course on power electronics located here.

Public holidays

This semester the classes are scheduled on Modays, 11 am to 1.00 pm at P07-319. However, according to the calender, there are three times in which public holiday falls on Mondays: Last week, Feb 9th and March 9th. Depending on the needs, we might have to arrange for replacement classes. If we do need them, then we will discuss this in class.

Welcome to MEP 1522

The main objective of this blog is to provide a platform for the students who are enrolled to MEP 1522 to get the latest information related to the course and the field of electrical drives. However those who are not enrolled to the course are also welcome and feel free to give comments.

The course website (which will not be updated as regular as this blog) is located at http://encon.fke.utm.my/courses/mep1422/ . You should visit the course website before you read this blog. It contains all the materials for the course, including the power point slides, PDF files, SIMULINK files, assignments, etc. So why do you need to visit this blog ? Well, it depends on the response that I will get - I am not sure yet since this is the first time that I have created a blog for MEP 1522 (which could be the last time as well)
